Find Production Issues As Early As Possible – The 3 Types of Product Inspections

Introduction

We provide three types of product inspections for your production in Asia.

Below is a breakdown of when each one happens, its purpose, and what our inspectors look for.

About Us

Who We Help – companies manufacturing in China.

Our Clients – come from the EU, UK, US & Canada.

Our Inspection Teams – cover factories across China from their bases in the Shanghai–Ningbo area and Guangdong province.

Pre-Production Inspection (PPI)

When This Happens

After raw materials and components are delivered, but before mass production begins.

The Purpose

To verify that inputs meet requirements and reduce the risk of systemic problems during production.

What We Look For (PPI):
  • Material quality (grades, dimensions, finishes, colors, wire gauges, etc.)
  • Compliance with specifications, drawings, and standards (UL, CE, ASTM, etc.)
  • Supplier certifications (RoHS, REACH, etc.)
  • Condition of storage and handling (moisture, contamination, damage)
  • Quantity checks to confirm sufficient materials are available

During Production Inspection (DPI)

When This Happens

At the early stage of production, usually after 5–10% of the order has been completed.

The Purpose

To ensure production processes, workmanship, and capacity align with requirements before full output continues.

What We Look For (DPI)
  • Assembly procedures and worker training
  • Machine calibration and maintenance
  • In-process quality control checks by the factory
  • Sampled product dimensions, functions, and finish quality
  • Identification of process errors that could multiply across the full order
  • Production schedule and capacity compared to order deadlines

Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI)

When This Happens

After 100% of production is finished and at least 80% of goods are packaged for shipment.

The Purpose

To provide final confirmation that the goods meet specifications before they leave the factory.

What We Look For (PSI)
  • Random sampling of finished products (AQL standards are common)
  • Functional, performance, and safety testing
  • Visual checks for cosmetic defects (scratches, dents, contamination)
  • Packaging quality (drop tests, sealing, barcodes, labeling accuracy)
  • Quantity verification and carton integrity
  • Compliance with client’s shipping requirements
